This 6-week class will introduce you to practical approaches to structure your comedy writing and get the most out of your ideas in sketch, storytelling, late night desk pieces, and more.
This class will take place over Zoom. You will need access to reliable internet and the Zoom app.
In this 6-week course you will learn:
Proper script formatting
Ways to generate ideas
Tips on the writing process
How to confidently pitch
Writing, editing and revision
Practical experience in a (virtual) writers room setting
This is meant as a survey course. Each week we will cover a different genre or skill. This class is for both experienced comedians and people just starting out - as long as you have a desire to write your own material, you are welcome. You will be required to write outside of class. Through your instructor's experiences working with various groups and shows at The Upright Citizens Brigade, running writers rooms for digital companies, and pitching shows and ideas to networks and companies such as Maker Studios and Comedy Central, you will learn you tips and skills to help you succeed whether you're in New York, Los Angeles, or anywhere in the world.Class is capped at 8 people.
ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Michael Busch is a Cleveland native who has over fifteen years of professional experience in the Los Angeles comedy scene and entertainment industry as an actor, writer, director, and producer. His television and film acting credits include: The Goldbergs, Adam Ruins Everything, Glee, The Middle, Pretty Little Liars, The Ghost Whisperer, Community, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Arsenio Hall Show, Body of Proof, Hope & Randy, Franklin & Bash, Workaholics, Carpoolers, Miss March, and dozens of national commercials. Michael Busch is a graduate of IO’s improv training program and studied improv and sketch at The Upright Citizens Brigade with founders Matt Besser and Matt Walsh, among others. He has acted in sketches on Human Giant, Key & Peele, and Conan; written sketches and digital series for FunnyorDie, Comedy Central, AwesomenessTV, Break, and Maker Studios; was a member of multiple house improv (Harold) teams at IO West and UCBTLA, a writer/performer on a house sketch (Maude) team at UCBTLA, and has also written/directed/produced/acted in various other shows there.
