Class Takeaway and Highlights
This is a fun, interactive and challenging 6-week course where participants 1) investigate what makes their voice sound unique and 2) explore major dialects spoken from around the world!
By the end of this class, students will…
Learn the basics of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
Understand how to translate this system to learn new dialects quickly
Learn the foundations to multiple dialects
Receive detailed professional note packets on each dialect
Explore exercises for developing characters through voice and speech
Get ample chances to act using these new dialects for coaching feedback.

Course Details
Class runs for six weeks on Wednesday evenings beginning November 4 and continuing through December 9, 2020. Students and instructor meet in real time from 6-8 PM EDT. All time zones welcome as long as students in other time zones can meet synchronously with the class. Reliable Internet access and the ability to use Zoom via mobile or desktop app required.
Pre-requisites: Acting, improv, voice/speech experience recommended, though not necessary for students who are willing to dig into the material. If you've taken any of our previous accent classes or have general familiarity with Phonetics, it is a plus!
Please note, this course is more in line with a typical theater training course and is not a comedy course (though you will certainly have a ton of fun and laugh a lot as you explore your voice!). Students should be prepared to participate in exercises and training which will require vocalization, breathing techniques and physical movement of the face.

Meet Your Instructor
Colton Weiss (He/Him/His) is a proud Columbus theatre native, and a leading voice, speech, acting instructor and production coach throughout Central Ohio. He has worked with local and national companies including: American Repertory Theatre, Weathervane Playhouse, Columbus Civic Theatre, the Columbus Zoo, and Tecumseh Drama. He has taught multiple versions of this class with Hashtag Comedy over the past year and is so excited to see this series continue to grow. A proud graduate of (The) Ohio State University and American Repertory Theater Institute at Harvard University where he studied voice, speech, and acting. Some of his favorite teaching credits include Hashtag Comedy (obviously), Harvard University, Ohio State, and Capital University. His teaching, performance, and research interests range from acting in musical theatre with dialects to greater mental health awareness for performers.
